Muslims around the world will be scanning the skies this weekend for the sighting of the new moon, which will mark the end of the holy month of Ramadaan and the beginning of the month of Shawwal.
The first day of Shawwal, which signifies Eid ul-Fitr, is expected to fall on either Monday, 31 March, or Tuesday, 1 April, depending on the sighting of the moon. This joyous occasion marks the conclusion of Ramadaan, a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. The day begins with the Eid prayer, performed in mosques and open grounds, where worshippers come together to give thanks for the strength and patience shown throughout the holy month.
Following prayers, the atmosphere is filled with warmth as loved ones exchange heartfelt greetings of “Eid Mubarak” and share traditional meals prepared with love and care. Dressed in their finest attire, families and friends gather for festive get-togethers, indulging in delicious food and exchanging gifts, known as Eidi.
Eid ul-Fitr, also known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is not only a time of celebration but also a day of gratitude, reflection, and spiritual renewal. It marks the successful completion of a month of devotion and self-discipline, reinforcing the values of compassion, humility, and generosity.
A key aspect of Eid is Zakat al-Fitr, a charitable donation that must be distributed before the Eid prayer. This obligatory act of giving ensures that those less fortunate can also partake in the celebrations, highlighting the principles of kindness and community upliftment.
