South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced a temporary night-time closure of the N2 northbound carriageway between the Mount Edgecombe and Sibaya interchanges to facilitate the installation of an overhead sign gantry spanning the highway.

Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer, said the project is progressing well.
“Construction along the N2 is reaching an advanced stage and now requires the installation of road sign gantries. This closure forms part of the ongoing upgrade of the N2 between KwaMashu and uMdloti,” he explained.

The closure will take place from 7:00 pm on Saturday, 15 November, until 3:00 am on Sunday, 16 November. It will affect only the northbound carriageway travelling from Durban towards King Shaka International Airport. The southbound carriageway, heading towards Durban, will remain open throughout the operation.

For the safety of both motorists and the construction team, traffic accommodation plans have been put in place. Road users will notice signage, barriers, and traffic-calming measures installed ahead of the closure.

Motorists are advised that heavy vehicles will not be able to access the M4 via Umhlanga due to tight turning points. Heavy vehicles that have not accessed the M4 before the Mount Edgecombe Interchange will need to use the R102 through Verulam, which may significantly increase travel time.

“All road users are advised to plan their routes ahead of time and, where possible, allow extra travel time. Trucks and heavy vehicle operators should consider delaying their trips over this period or find suitable staging areas to avoid major congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure that their drivers are aware of the closure,” Lowe said.
Motorists are encouraged to exercise patience and adhere to all directional signage during the closure.
