The Verulam Cemetery, located off Wick Street, has been nominated for Provincial Heritage Site status. The nomination proposal highlights the cemetery’s historical significance, cultural importance, and architectural value.
A resident, Vikash Sookdeo, who initiated the nomination, expressed his passion for preserving the site. “As a local, I’ve driven past the cemetery many times since I was younger, and it always sparked my curiosity. One day, a friend and I decided to explore it, and I was blown away by its beauty and rich history,” he said. Sookdeo, who noticed the site was up for sale, believes it has significant historical value and is working to ensure its preservation.
He added that the cemetery is a significant historical site that showcases the town’s rich history. “With graves dating back to the early 1900s and notable names such as Somers and Alborough, the cemetery is a valuable part of Verulam’s heritage. Its connection to the town’s founding by Wesleyan settlers in 1850 makes it an important piece of local history,” he stated. The cemetery is also home to the graves of significant historical figures, including Brigadier General Sir Duncan McKenzie.
