The Rotary Club of Phoenix hosted a substance abuse awareness and training programme which was attended and well received by educators and learners from 28 primary schools and eight high schools from the Phoenix and Verulam areas.
It was a free entry event with 110 guests in attendance. Each of these schools were represented by two learners and an educator. They were exposed to an interactive programme by professionals in the field who empowered learners about saying no to drugs and peer pressure as well as how to make healthy and informed choices. “Our hope was that those invited will take back what they have learnt and assist learners at their schools by arranging unique educational and support programmes as a preventative measure to curb substance abuse and peer pressure in schools,” said the management of the Rotary Club.

The Rotary Club of Phoenix also created a guidebook of activities, ideas and illustrations for schools as an aid to assisting them in their projects. They thanked all the professionals who gave up their time to empower the learners with the knowledge to make responsible and healthy choices.
“Special appreciation goes out to Konecta SA, Shaun Govender, iTheku Wellness Hospital, Rubien Chiniah, Meryl Nair and Lisha Bhadree who sponsored the programme generously on the day. It is generous businesses and professionals like these that make it possible for our club to make a difference in the community. We are also grateful to Reddy from Hopeville Primary School for allowing us the use of the school hall and its facilities free of charge. We hope that our guests will use the resources and information conveyed to make a difference and lend a hand to their peers,” added the club management.
