Whether he’s serenading an audience with heartfelt ballads or hyping up a wedding crowd as a charismatic MC, Govender brings unmatched energy and authenticity to every stage he steps on. Professionally an accountant, Govender also channels his passion into performing as a gifted singer and charismatic MC. In this exclusive interview with the Merebank and Chatsworth Tabloid, Govender opens up about his journey, his inspirations, and why staying true to himself—and his roots—is the secret behind his growing success.
Merebank and Chatsworth Tabloid (MCT): Let’s take it back, what first inspired you to get into music and hosting events?

Kayurin Govender (KG): I’ve loved singing since I was a child. It helped me through some really tough times and was also there during my biggest wins. I always knew I had a voice, but I was hesitant to share it because I’ve had no formal training or vocal coaching, but once I posted my first few singing videos on TikTok, the support came flooding in. It pushed me to keep going. As for hosting, people would always say I had a natural connection with others. After a few successful family events, it just clicked—I realised I could do this on a bigger scale. I wanted to create joy and unforgettable moments through music and events.
MCT: Was there a moment when you realised, “Yes, this is what I’m meant to do”?
KG: Oh, absolutely. When my partner and I started sharing duets as Kayurin and Thirushan, the response was insane. Bookings started pouring in—for weddings, temples, and other functions. That gave me the confirmation I needed. And with MCing, once I got those first few glowing reviews, the bookings just kept coming. It was clear people connected with what I had to offer. I’m beyond grateful for every client who’s placed their trust in me and recommended me to others.
MCT: Who were your biggest influences growing up—musically or otherwise?
KG: Above all, my mum has been my biggest influence. She’s the most incredible person I know—kind, strong, and selfless. Everything good in me comes from her. Musically, I’ve always admired legends like Shreya Ghoshal, SPB, Chitra Amma, Arijit Singh, Jonita Gandhi, and Shankar Mahadevan. I also love what Vidya Vox does with fusion music. On the Western side, I’d say Taylor Swift, Adele, and Rihanna have all played a role in shaping my sound.
MCT: What’s been your proudest moment so far in your creative journey?
KG: Just being consistently booked and busy in this industry is an achievement. But what really touches me is when people come up to me after a performance to say how much they loved it—whether it’s my singing or my hosting. It means so much to know I left a mark.
MCT: What’s your process like when preparing for a live performance or event?
KG: I’m calm and collected on the day itself, but I like to be super thorough beforehand. I always have detailed calls or in-person meetings with my clients to go over every detail. I offer suggestions, take in their vision, and ensure everything is lined up for smooth execution. My aim is always to walk out with a happy client and a job well done.
MCT: Have you ever had a performance that totally surprised you?
KG: Definitely! I was booked to MC the Mariamman Temple Easter Festival in 2024 and thought I’d just be introducing the dance acts. But once I got on stage, I surprised myself—I started interviewing the dancers, sang live on the spot, and got the crowd involved with chants. At one point, everyone was screaming “Vetri Vel Murugannike Arohara!” It was such an amazing energy. I walked off that stage buzzing.
MCT: What’s your dream venue or event to perform or host?
KG: Locally, I’ve done some incredible venues in Durban, but performing at the Durban ICC is still on my bucket list. Internationally, I’d love to perform at a Shivaratri celebration in Mauritius. I sing both film and devotional songs, so that would be a dream come true.
MCT: Your TikTok following is growing steadily. What kind of content do you enjoy making most?
KG: I love creating content that grabs attention—whether it’s me singing at home, at events, or behind-the-scenes clips. It’s real, and people seem to connect with it. I’m just grateful for the support and that people enjoy what I share.
MCT: Do you think platforms like TikTok have changed the game for local artists?
KG: Oh, for sure. Songs I’ve sung have reached audiences in the UK, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India—you name it. The global reach is unbelievable. I’ve even made some great friends through the app—some attended my wedding via video call!
MCT: Planning events can be chaotic. What’s your secret to keeping it all together?
KG: Planning ahead and listening carefully to your client. You can have the best run-sheet in the world, but if your audience shifts gears on the day, you’ve got to adapt. Read the room, think on your feet, and always have a back-up plan!
MCT: Any event disasters you turned into a win?
KG: So many! Events starting two hours late, caterers arriving behind schedule… I could write a book! I’ve seen real-life drama unfold on stage—from mothers-in-law clashing with brides to drunk guests trying to grab the mic! But I always stay composed and find a way to turn things around without adding fuel to the fire. Let’s just say, I’ve got stories!
MCT: Do you incorporate your culture into your events?
KG: Always. I think people now know me as the MC who’s always in a kurta! Being young and so connected to my heritage, I love letting my culture shine wherever I go. It’s beautiful to share that and see people embrace it.
MCT: What advice would you give to someone trying to break into the creative industry?
KG: Don’t ever think you’re not good enough. Keep showing up, keep trying. Why hide your talent when there’s a world full of people waiting to experience it? You never know whose life you could touch just by sharing your gift.
MCT: Where can fans engage with your content on social media ?
KG: my social media handles are : email: kayurinkgovender@gmail.com and TikTok: @kayurinthirushanmusic and Instagram: @kayurinthirushanmusic
