Swinging for greatness — one tournament at a time
Eight-year-old Luyanda Gumede, a Grade Three learner at Sarina Primary School in Pinetown, is fast becoming one of South Africa’s brightest young golf talents. Ranked first in KwaZulu-Natal and third in Africa in his age group, Luyanda’s journey is one of resilience, family bonds, and a deep love for the game.

The Savannah Park youngster was introduced to golf in 2021 by his father, Siphiwe Gumede, following the heartbreaking loss of his mother, Gladness, during the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as a way to cope with grief has blossomed into a shared passion and a promising career for the young prodigy.

“From the moment he picked up a club, I knew there was something special about him. As a single father raising Luyanda and his sister Ayanda, he now plays the role of coach, mentor, and number one fan — often converting their modest backyard into a makeshift training ground,” said Siphiwe.

Luyanda practices at the Papwa Sewgolum Golf Course in Reservoir Hills, sharpening his skills alongside his close friends, twins Daniel and Cameron Lawson. While not officially affiliated with a golf club, several local courses allow him to play for free in recognition of his clear talent and growing reputation.

Remarkably, Luyanda manages to juggle both his academic responsibilities and his demanding golf schedule. He practices in the afternoons with his father, balancing schoolwork and sport with impressive discipline for someone his age.
Despite being only eight, Luyanda has competed in more than 20 tournaments, winning an equal number of trophies — including a standout performance at the recent Delta Botswana Championships.

“Golf is not an easy or cheap sport. We’ve made it this far through pure determination and sacrifice. But if Luyanda is going to represent South Africa one day — and I believe he will — we need support,” Siphiwe said.

Luyanda’s manager, Minehle Mthembu, is appealing to individuals, businesses, and professional junior golf clubs for sponsorships or donations to support Luyanda’s development. “The most essential needs are funds to cover his registration fees and travel costs for the various tournaments, both locally and internationally,” she said. “Any assistance to help this young golfer reach his full potential would make a world of difference.”

Luyanda dreams of one day standing among the world’s best — proudly flying the South African flag in international competitions, including events in countries like China.
“Luyanda plays not just for himself, but in memory of his mother. He plays with heart, humility, and purpose — and he has a bright future ahead of him,” Sphiwe added.
With the right support, this humble star from Savannah Park could soon be making South Africa proud on the global stage — one swing at a time.
