In a heartfelt send-off befitting a man of great stature, Avonford Secondary School recently honoured the retirement of its respected principal, Mr T Reddy. The farewell, held at the school’s Conference Centre earlier this month, marked the end of a distinguished 42-year career in education, with the last decade spent at the helm of Avonford Secondary.
The event was a glamorous affair, celebrating not only Mr Reddy’s leadership but also the indelible legacy he leaves behind. Described as an eminent educationist, Mr Reddy was recognised for his unwavering commitment to academic excellence and community upliftment. Under his stewardship, Avonford Secondary reached unprecedented heights, most notably a 100% pass rate in the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination. “That is the cherry on the top and Avonford’s crowning glory,” said a visibly proud Mr Reddy at the function.
In his farewell address, Mr Reddy expressed heartfelt thanks to educators, parents, learners, and support staff. He lauded the collaborative spirit that propelled the school to success and offered his full support to Acting Principal Mrs M Reddy, expressing confidence in the school’s continued progress under her guidance.
Mr Reddy’s journey in education began in Clairwood, where he completed his primary schooling, and he later pursued his secondary education at Orient Islamic High. Although he initially aspired to study law, financial constraints and a bursary opportunity led him to Springfield College of Education, where he completed his teaching diploma in 1982, specialising in Mathematics and Art. His teaching career kicked off at Effingham Secondary, where he spent two formative years under the mentorship of Mr Nankissoor, a guiding influence he continues to acknowledge.
Thirteen years later, he took on a new challenge as Deputy Principal of Hopeville Primary, where his leadership left a lasting impression. He spearheaded the construction of the school hall and significantly advanced the performance of the Mathematics and Science departments. However, the call of high school Mathematics proved irresistible, and in due course, Mr Reddy applied for and was appointed principal of Avonford Secondary. His tenure there, which concluded in March 2025, was characterised by firm leadership, clear vision, and an ethos of “tough love.”
At the farewell function, Acting Circuit Manager of Phoenix Central, Mr D Moodley, paid tribute to Mr Reddy’s influence and dedication to schools in Phoenix and for being a mentor to many principals in the circuit. “Avonford has become a trendsetter in the Phoenix Central circuit,” said Mr Moodley, lauding Mr Reddy’s role as both leader and mentor. Echoing these sentiments, School Governing Body Chairperson Mr S Rajcoomar offered his thanks for Mr Reddy’s years of selfless service and trailblazing leadership, adding that Mr Reddy’s legacy will continue to shape the future of the school. “You’ve set new boundaries and defied all odds. May the rest of your days be the best of your days,” said Rajcoomar.
As for the road ahead, Mr Reddy is looking forward to some well-deserved rest and cherished family time. “It’s now family time,” he said with a smile. He plans to spend quality time with his wife, Mrs Gonum Reddy, his four grandchildren, and two daughters, Dr Tashnie Naidoo and Mrs Sadhna Reddy Moodley, a pharmacist. Both his daughters reside in Australia, which Mr Reddy noted means travel is certainly on the cards. He also looks forward to indulging in his hobbies of cycling, hiking, and gardening.
In a touching tribute, Acting Principal Mrs M Reddy echoed the outgoing principal’s sentiments and expressed her commitment to keeping the Avonford Secondary flag flying high. “Go well, sir. You have earned your retirement,” she said. Indeed, Mr T Reddy’s name will remain etched in the history of Avonford Secondary – a symbol of vision, perseverance, and excellence in education.
