A united front and a demonstration of civic pride was recently present by the residents of Brayford, Bankford and Chartford, when they rolled up their sleeves and joined forces in cleaning the areas along the Phoenix Highway and police station on Saturday, 11 June.
Pastors Leonard Silas Arjunun and Gregory Woolfuth, initiated the clean-up initiative after the unmaintained land became an eyesore and an illegal dumping ground.
Pst Arjunun said: “Like the wise words said by Mahatma Gandhi ‘Man often becomes what he believes himself’. We cannot sit back and wait for miracles, we need to make it happen. Our plan is to continue with ideas to have a clean environment that everyone will enjoy in Sunford and surrounding areas. Hopefully this will filter down to our neighbours and more role-players.”
Pst Arjunun added that neighbourhood pollution comes in all forms, such as cigarette butts on street corners, dog remnants on the grass, food wrappers, pesticides and fertilisers in yards. “Luckily, a few easy adjustments in habits can snowball into a community effort to make your neighbourhood cleaner and healthier for everyone,” said Pst Arjunun.
Meals were provided to those who helped clean up the area by pastors Arjunun and Woolfuth.
“We are appreciative of the fact that DSW and Parks and Gardens assisted our initiatives. A big thank you to those that helped us, including Sharen Kistnasamy from DSW. She supplied us with refuse bags and made arrangements for vehicles to remove the material from the clean-up and to the members of Parks and Gardens, you and your teams were awesome with trucks, equipment and the crew. We have been criticised already but we will not stop us from cleaning up. These initiatives are community based and have no reflection on any political party or organisation,” added Arjunun.
