The Lions Club of Durban North held their annual training day event at their clubhouse, situated in Uitsig Road, where the new leadership was taught how to go about ensuring that they meet the mandate of their responsibilities to the both the members and the community.

Known for their virtues of unity and community, the Lions International training initiative shows new secretaries, presidents, treasurers, membership chair and service chair Lions the ropes in their positions to ensure that the running of club projects operates smoothly. The president of the Lions Club in Durban North, Avril Hobbs, said there were 28 Lions in attendance from throughout Durban and surrounding areas, for the training day.

She said: “We will also have more training in the South Coast and up in Northern KwaZulu-Natal as well as a regional training for all Lions.” She added that the training sessions will not only help Lions to spearhead community upliftment in a more proficient manner, but equip them with tools that can be used in all walks of life.

“Lions pride themselves in being transparent and so they are thought how to carry our club values as well. All attendees had fun, especially when it came to learning more about social media. We consider social media an important tool for lions. With lockdown we learned that we cant sit in our boxes, we have to get out there and move with the times,” said Hobbs.

The members learned how to utilise tools such as Canva and TikTok, the latter being a new concept to many of the Lions at the event. “They were really excited about social media and marketing, to the extent that we are planning to run that again with everyone bringing along their equipment. We want to be effective and tell a story. Social Media for us have been huge lately, we put and appeal out after the first floods, just in the Durban North community and people have came out in support like we couldn’t believe. Our clubhouse have been filled and emptied several times with clothes, food and other goods,” said Hobbs.
