The Umdoni Municipality Mayor Councillor Sibongile Khathi together with the Ward Councillor, Mbali Cele-Luthuli and other councillors conducted a sod turning ceremony at Ward 16 recently.

The purpose of this ceremony was to announce the launch of the construction of the Gumede Bridge which will cost R5 Million. The reconstruction will approximately carry over a period of six months. Umdoni Municipality communications manager, Sphelele Cele said, “The bridge is completely dilapidated as a result of floods which took place in 2019, that is why the municipality is rehabilitating it.  This bridge is a gateway for two communities of Ndlovini and Sgumedeni. With the reconstruction of the bridge, residents will not need to use a longer route to get from one point to other.” Umdoni Municipality Mayor Councillor Sibongile Khathi said,“As the leaders of this municipality, it gives us a sense of joy when we witness the community’s service delivery requests being fulfilled.

We therefore call for the community to ensure that this project runs smoothly and must work together with the contractor to ensure its successful completion.” This project sees an opportunity for the unemployed and will be assuring the involvement of the community members as they will be using this facility on a regular basis. The temporary employment of the unemployed locals will equip them with skills and experience so they are able to go out and find employment. Furthermore, giving a slice of the pie to emerging contractors will ensure growth of their businesses.” The local traditional council, represented by Induna Khathi thanked the municipality on behalf of the community and committed in working with all sectors in ensuring that the projects runs smoothly.
