The eThekwini Municipality is calling on all undertakers and monumentalists operating in the area to register or renew their details on their database in a bid to root out all those operating illegally.
An increase in demand for their services, mostly due to the Covid-19 pandemic,
has seen undertakers and funeral parlours mushroom in the City which the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture has found concerning. The acting head of department, Vusi Mazibuko, said the municipality is concerned about the growing number of illegal undertakers and monumentalists.
He said: “This practice has a negative impact not only on the business sector, but grieving families as well. One of the ways that the City is trying to regulate the industry is by encouraging businesses to register on the database. This will allow them to be empowered with relevant skills to ensure compliance and that the sector is well regulated.”
Mazibuko said undertakers and monumentalists have until 30 November to register and renew their status. “This process will enable the City to monitor and address the increasing illegal practices in this sector,” he added.
Registration forms are obtainable from the 7th floor, Delta Towers Building, 303 Dr Pixley KaSeme (West) Street.
