The decision for Alfred Duma Municipal Mayor Vincent Madlala to remain mayor came after a council meeting was held on Thursday, 26 August.
Councillors present at the meeting said that members of the Democratic Alliance and Inkatha Freedom Party called for the mayor to step down with immediate effect. They said that 43 votes against the motion of no confidence was cast and the DA and IFP voted for the motion to pass. “The votes cast for the motion was not enough and the mayor will remain in power,” said IFP councillor Abbas Warasally.
Warasally added that they will seek further legal advice as this has a negative effect on the council. Warasally wanted to argue for a secret vote, but he said that his request was ignored and council moved forward for the vote.
The call for motion of no confidence was made after Mayor Madlala and his daughter were both arrested and charged for allegedly defeating the ends of justice. The mayor was granted R10 000 bail, with his next court date being 22 October. The mayor was arrested on 26 July, at his home in Ezakheni section E.
