Political parties recently joined the voices outside Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court calling for an end to crime and racism during a protest while a man and a minor were due to appear on charges of murder, on Tuesday, 3 August.
Daryl Dean Moodley, and a 17-year-old boy were charged for the murder of 17-year-old Sifiso Donda, who was allegedly stabbed and killed during an altercation, on Saturday. Both accused appeared for a formal bail application on Friday, and were denied bail by the court. Representatives from the ANC, DA, IFP AND EFF rallied and chanted against racism and crime outside court as they believe that the boy, who is African, was killed because he was in a relationship with a 15-year-old girl of Indian decent. EFF Provincial Chairperson in KZN, Vusi Khoza, said they have come to support Sifiso’s family as an incident of this nature should have never happened.
“We want to state it categorically, that no person should take the law into their own hands. We did not expect that such a young man would be so brutally murdered for being in a romantic relationship with a person of another race. We are not in 1948 when apartheid started. We are in a democratic South Africa and people should be free to date who they want to date. We are here to oppose what has happened. We are against any crime, if it’s race based or not. These incidents and people like these perpetrators are raising unnecessary racial tension among our people. People of African origin and Indian origin have been co-existing in peace together for a very long time. Incidents such as these are barbaric and should never be allowed,” he said. It has been confirmed that the girl had been kicked out of her home by her mother and she is currently residing with family members since the murder.
