The towns of Winterton and Bergville remain largely intact as a result of the actions taken by police, farmers and community members.
Leadership took a walkabout to the shops and engaged with business owners during a recent visit by the Cogta MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, accompanied by uThukela District Mayor, Councillor Siphiwe Mazibuko, Okhahlamba Mayor, Councillor Mlungisi Ndlangisa, uThukela District Speaker, Councillor Phindile Strydom. With the start of the civil unrest, the Boxer store in West Street, Bergville was petrol bombed outside the entrance, but due to the swift action of SAPS Bergville, Winterton and Ematsheni, the fire was put out. Police immediately stepped in and prevented any looting. Members of the community, farmers and police, had started working together and the towns of Bergville and Winterton were safe.
During the visits, MEC Hlomuka saluted the solidarity between the communities and law enforcement agencies as they have worked together to prevent public violence and damage to property within the Bergville and Winterton areas. “Community members, business owners and other stakeholders have stepped forward to stop the looting and support those affected by food insecurity,” said MEC Hlomuku. UThukela Mayor, Cllr Mazibuko, appealed to the residents to refrain from any acts of violence and criminality. He expressed his deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to those who were directly and indirectly affected as a result of the unrest. “We are calling upon all the communities and stakeholders to work together towards restoring unity and social cohesion. Let us speak in one voice of calm, peace and love for one another and rebuild our district,” he concluded.
