The National Covid-19 Antibody Study (NCAS) which is being done by the Human Sciences Research Council, to estimate the prevalence of Covid-19 antibodies among the population of South Africa, is underway in Phoenix.
The study was requested by the Covid-19 Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) and the information collected during the study will assist the advisory committee and the government to better understand the nature of the Covid-19 epidemic in the country and the various factors that are driving it. Key information will be how many people may have had Covid-19 infections and what proportion of them did not show any signs and symptoms of the virus. It is a national survey conducted in all parts of the country in 6000 households. Areas have been randomly selected for inclusion in the study. In Phoenix and Tongaat the study will cover 14 communities. Actual interviews at the homes of selected participants will be conducted by teams of Epicentre. The majority of participants will be asked to provide a small amount of blood by a qualified nurse in order to test for Covid-19 antibodies. The blood results will be linked to the information provided in the questionnaire to understand how Covid-19 is spread in communities.
The community is encouraged to take part in the study, given its national importance. Without essential information, the country cannot successfully combat and overcome the virus. Ward 49 Councillor Tino Pillay reiterated some things which the community should be wary of. He said: “This survey is purely voluntary and you can decline their interview if you feel uncomfortable.
