Fourteen passengers and one driver were injured when a mini-bus taxi collided with a streetlight on Chris Hani Road in Parkhill on Saturday. Fortunately no deaths were reported.
Shawn Herbst, spokesperson for Netcare911 said that the mini-bus taxi was driving at a high speed and lost control hitting a wall, a light pole, water mains and the safety barrier. “The driver of the taxi, a 31-year-old male sustained minor injuries and was treated on-scene before being transported by ambulance to hospital,” he added. Earlier this month, MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni had partnered with the SA National Taxi Council, who are focusing on ensuring public transportation, especially the taxis, are safe on roads. Nkonyeni’s announcement came after 47 deaths were recorded on the roads in KwaZulu-Natal over the Easter weekend.
