A Phoenix family has been plunged into mourning after a 49-year-old breadwinner was mauled by two dogs on Thursday, 10 January, in Rucklen Place (Phoenix Tabloid, 14 January 2019) and succumbed to his life-threatening injuries on Saturday.
Northcroft resident, Dharmaseelan Aubrey Moodley, a casual driver, of Northcroft, was bitten by two dogs, allegedly a boerboel and a pitbull cross, and was fighting for his life whilst in the Intensive Care Unit at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.
According to reports, Moodley had been passing by when the canines pounced on him, mauling him and ripping chunks of flesh from his body, including his head and chest.
The victim sustained a crushed windpipe and had to undergo emergency surgery whilst he was assisted to breathe via a ventilator. His critical wounds were painstakingly attended to avoid the risk of infection. Sadly, Moodley’s injuries were too grave and he demised on Saturday. Local residents heard Moodley’s screams for help and rushed to his aid where he was found bloodied and mauled.
Speaking to The Phoenix Tabloid, Phoenix Community Police Forum chairman, Umesh Singh, slammed the fatal attack and said dog mauling cases in Phoenix needs to be urgently addressed. “This is most distressing to hear that a family has lost a husband and father; believed to be the sole breadwinner, in such a gruesome manner. “Investigations will reveal the circumstances leading to the attack, however, it remains that a life has been lost. “Those who own vicious dogs need to take responsibility for their pets and ensure that they comply with the requirements of owning such animals,” said Singh.Moodley’s family is devastated by his loss and are preparing for his funeral which will take place during the course of the week. Police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele said a case of keeping a ferocious dog was opened at the Phoenix police station for investigation.
