EThekwini Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, officially opened Westown Square on 27 March, marking a significant milestone in Shongweni’s transformation.
The R1.3 billion development is the first phase of a 2,000-hectare mixed-use project along the N3 and Kassier Road Interchange, which will include retail, residential, commercial, logistics, industrial, and business park precincts.
The project, which began in 2021, is expected to generate R15 billion in investment over the next 10 to 15 years, create 15,000 construction jobs, and 8,500 permanent positions. Mayor Xaba highlighted the development’s role in unlocking eThekwini’s economic potential and creating much-needed jobs.
The development includes the newly launched R2 billion Balwin Residential project and a R600 million private hospital. Xaba described Westown as the first “Smart City” in KwaZulu-Natal, where technology will be used to manage the city sustainably and improve residents’ quality of life.
EThekwini Municipality has invested R600 million in bulk infrastructure to support the project, which has already provided employment to 1,200 workers and 451 permanent jobs in Westown Square alone. Local communities such as Ntshongweni, KwaNdengezi, and Hammarsdale have benefited, with 27 companies empowered, including 21 black-owned businesses.
Westown Square is projected to generate R21 million in annual rates income, expected to rise to over R500 million by 2037. Mayor Xaba emphasized the importance of collaboration between government and the private sector to address issues of poverty, unemployment, and inequality.
Carlos Correia, CEO of Fundamentum Development Company, called the project a vote of confidence in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal. He noted that Westown’s strategic location and broad appeal will attract significant investment, boosting the region’s economy.
The opening of Westown Square marks a new chapter in eThekwini’s development, driving growth, job creation, and sustainable urban planning.
