The Ward 73 councillor Daniel Logan Mea has welcomed the introduction of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) initiative to KwaZulu-Natal, particularly in Chatsworth, describing it as a positive step towards addressing youth unemployment.
Mea raised concerns about the ongoing challenges faced by many young people, saying unemployment continues to leave youth feeling excluded from their communities and uncertain about the future.
“I must place on record that we are truly grateful for initiatives such as this, led by National Minister Dean Macpherson under the Expanded Public Works Programme. This programme will go a long way in restoring hope and dignity to our young people,” he said.

Through the Installation, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) component, the programme aims to equip young people with practical skills and valuable work experience, helping to improve employability while creating pathways towards further learning and sustainable employment opportunities.
The initiative also focuses on maintaining public infrastructure, creating employment opportunities while contributing towards the improvement of essential community facilities and assets.
Young people have been encouraged to apply through the SAYouth platform, which assists with registration, digital CV creation and access to employment opportunities.
“Having heard the positive testimonies from young participants who have already benefited from this initiative, we are encouraged and grateful that the EPWP continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our youth,” Mea added.
