A viral video circulating on social media has sparked widespread shock after a municipal water tanker was involved in a fatal incident in Adams Mission, Ward 96, eMbumbulu, on Monday morning.
The graphic footage, which has been widely shared across various social media platforms, shows the moments after the incident involving a municipal water tanker. The video has prompted calls for accountability, while many residents have urged people to stop sharing the distressing footage out of respect for the deceased and their family.
In a statement issued on Monday, the eThekwini Municipality confirmed that one person died in the incident.
“The eThekwini Municipality has noted with deep sadness a fatal incident involving a municipal water tanker in Ward 96, eMbumbulu, this morning. One person lost their life in the incident. The Municipality extends its condolences to the family, friends and community of the deceased,” the Municipality said.
The Municipality confirmed that the South African Police Service has opened a case and investigations are underway.
It said it is cooperating fully with SAPS and has also launched its own internal processes.
“As the matter is under investigation, the Municipality is not in a position to comment on the circumstances that led to the incident,” the statement read.
Municipal officials have also been deployed to Adams Mission to visit the bereaved family and provide the necessary support.
The Municipality further appealed to members of the public to refrain from circulating the video on social media, saying this should be done out of respect for the deceased and the grieving family.
