The tight-knit community of Caneside, Phoenix, is still reeling in shock following a devastating fire that claimed the life of 49-year-old Allen Sahdeo last week. The father of one lost his life in the tragic blaze that broke out on the afternoon of Monday, 26 May.
Sahdeo’s wife was left critically injured in the fire and is currently receiving intensive care at Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital. KZN VIP spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said: “KZN VIP responded to a tragic house fire along Caneside Drive in Phoenix, where a man lost his life and a woman was left critically injured.” Naidoo added that KZN VIP emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene following reports of the house engulfed in flames. Upon arrival, neighbours were seen attempting to break into the residence and control the blaze, but were hindered by the rapidly spreading fire.

Despite the combined efforts of community members and emergency responders, the male homeowner was found severely burned and showed no signs of life. Paramedics declared him deceased at the scene. Naidoo said: “The female occupant, believed to be his wife, sustained extensive burns and was stabilised on site before being urgently transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.” The circumstances leading up to the fire remain unknown, and emergency services, including fire and law enforcement officials, were in attendance.
Neighbours described Sahdeo as a kind and generous man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. One neighbour said: “He was always there for everyone. If you needed help fixing something, he would be the first to offer. He was a devoted father to his lovely daughter and wife. Allen was truly one of a kind.” Another elderly neighbour added: “Allen will always be remembered for his good deeds. I feel so heartbroken because it’s Father’s Day next week and I wish he was here so I can spoil him the same way he spoilt me on Mother’s Day recently.”
The cause of the fire is still under police investigation. Sahdeo’s funeral service was held at the Stanmore Community Hall on Sunday, 1 June. He is survived by his daughter, wife, and a host of family members who are still devastated by his untimely passing.
