The accident, which involved three vehicles, has left the communities of Ladysmith and Estcourt in mourning. The four victims were laid to rest in Estcourt on Monday, 13 January. The victims of this tragedy were identified as Anil Omarparsadh (60), Rekadevi Omarparsadh (61), Ashokumar Siyadal (60), and Meeshnee Naidoo (50).

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, but sadly, all four lives were lost. Investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

Councillor Patience Kok, voiced concern over road safety, particularly regarding taxis and other vehicles often involved in accidents. “We need to ask why far too often taxis are involved in road accidents. Is this truly the loss of innocent lives due to ‘accidents’?

“If E-Toll tags were successful, a compulsory monitoring system could be implemented by the Department of Transport to detect speeding taxis and trucks. The road carnage during the holiday season has been devastating. The Estcourt community is heartbroken, and we pray for strength for the family and friends of the deceased,” said Kok.

Among the victims was Meeshnee Naidoo, affectionately known as “Neshu”, a housewife and cherished member of her community. Her close friend, Shakira Jairajh Autar, shared a tribute: “Losing Neshu felt like the world had come crashing down. She was more than a neighbour and friend, she was family. We connected instantly, sharing countless memories filled with laughter, music, and creativity.

“My kids grew up with her. She was the life of every party. For my daughter’s matric farewell, she created the most beautiful décor and table settings. Her creativity was unmatched.”

Autar described Neshu as a “source of strength and joy”, someone who celebrated others’ victories and selflessly gave her best advice. “Thank you for everything you did for my family, Priyanka, and me. I hope I was able to reciprocate the amazing friendship you showed me. You will be deeply missed.”

The grief-stricken community remembered the other victims for their kindness and dedication. Friends and relatives shared their disbelief, saying that they were still in shock and struggling to come to terms with the loss.

This tragic crash has left a void in the Estcourt community, but it has also united friends, neighbours, and loved ones in remembering the lives of those lost. As the investigation continues, many are calling for stricter road safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
