A devastating accident occurred near the N2 south on-ramp in Mt. Edgecombe, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday, 16 September, claiming the life of a 12-year-old girl. The incident involved a grey Kia Sportage, carrying a family of four, which collided with a concrete barrier.
According to Prem Balram, Rusa spokesperson, the driver allegedly attempted to avoid a metal drum filled with soil placed on the yellow line, but was unable to stop the vehicle due to another vehicle on the right. The impact resulted in life-threatening injuries for the 12-year-old girl, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The three other occupants of the vehicle, a man, his wife, and another child, sustained minor injuries. Passing motorists contacted the Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) Phoenix operations centre, requesting assistance, and reaction officers discovered paramedics from a private ambulance service in attendance.
