More than one hundred writers, poets and wordsmith thought-leaders will be featured in the 26th edition of the Time of the Writer festival, presented by the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 16 to 21 March.
The programme is packed with a range of live events and online webinars that will showcase both the creative juices of South African wordsmiths as well as their deep and critical insights into the state of the nation.
The theme for the 2023 Time of the Writer festival is “Placemaking: Roots, Influence, Imagination and Expression”. The curatorial team has pulled together an impressive array of writers. The line-up includes, amongst several others, Fred Khumalo, Niq Mhlongo, Lebohang Masango, Makhosazana Xaba, Kumi Naidoo and Yewande Omotoso. Novelist and playwright Dr Sindiwe Magona has been selected as the 2023 Featured Author
Dr Magona (79) is iconic in South African literature and theatre. She has produced theatrical plays and continues delivering authoritative lectures and key addresses at universities and conferences locally and internationally. Dr Magona has authored over 120 children’s books, four stage plays, two short story books, works of autobiography and biography, novels, radio plays, and a screenplay. She writes in isiXhosa and English.
The Time of the Writer festival is funded by the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the KZN Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture PESP Fund, which is administered by the National Arts Council.
