Law enforcement units have swooped on two properties in Phoenix with alleged links to the ‘Southside gang,’ seizing an estimated R10 million worth of cocaine and arresting a man and a woman. The pair were reportedly operating an undercover cocaine laboratory.
Durban Metro Police Service Special Operations Directorate was part of the police contingent. Durban Metro Police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, said: “A man and woman were arrested and charged during the successful takedown. Preliminary investigations reveal the drugs were intended for both local distribution and popular night spots in Umhlanga and Ballito.”

The operation was a joint effort by the DPCI South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau, DPCI NPVC, Provincial Tracking Team, KZN TRT, PMB K9 Unit, Metro Police K9 Unit and security partners Magma and Fidelity.
“We commend all teams involved for their dedication and commitment in keeping our communities safe,” he added.
Media reports have identified the arrested suspects as Greenbury residents Narelle Maikoo, 34, and Brene Braydon Chetty, 22, who appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Both suspects were remanded in custody and will reappear in court for their bail application.
