Phoenix-born Prianka Pearlene Pillay has made her family and the Phoenix community proud after emerging as the highest achiever and being named Best Overall Student following an intensive nine-month South African National Defence Force (SANDF) logistics training programme.

Pillay’s outstanding achievement was celebrated at her graduation in Cape Town on Wednesday, 9 September, marking the culmination of months of demanding training, sacrifice, late-night studying and unwavering determination.

For the young Eastbury resident, the recognition was a defining moment that made every sacrifice, demanding day and late night of studying worthwhile. Reflecting on her achievement, Pillay said she was humbled by the recognition and proud that her months of hard work had paid off.

I joined the SANDF in 2025, motivated by my desire to serve my country and build a disciplined career. The SANDF has taught me discipline, responsibility, perseverance and self-belief,” she said.

She completed four courses during the nine-month programme, including Initial Supply Support, Transport Administration Part 1, Initial Driver Training and Initial Combat Log Support, while maintaining the discipline and standards expected within a military environment.

“Pillay’s determination to excel was not confined to the classroom. While navigating the demands of her training, she was selected to represent the Army volleyball team and once again distinguished herself, earning the Best Overall Player accolade while contributing to the team’s successful campaign, which saw them lift the cup for the South African Army.
At just 21, Pillay has managed to excel both academically and on the sporting field, a remarkable double achievement that speaks to her discipline, determination and drive to excel.

Long before the military uniform, training and accolades, however, Pillay’s journey began in Phoenix. She attended Hopeville Primary School before continuing her education at Eastbury Secondary School.

Today, the young woman who once walked through the corridors of local schools is proudly carving out a future for herself within the SANDF. Behind her success are sacrifices that are not captured by certificates and trophies – long days, late nights, exhaustion and the pressure of completing demanding courses while remaining committed to the standards expected of her.

Hoping her journey will inspire other young people in her community to pursue their own ambitions, Pillay shared a message of encouragement with Phoenix youth.
“Choose education, stay focused, disciplined and believe in yourself. Surround yourself with people who want to see you succeed. Hard work can change your future,” she said.

For Pillay, being named Best Overall Student is not the final destination, but rather the beginning of what she hopes will be a long and successful career serving her country.
“My next goal is to continue excelling in Logistics, grow in the SANDF and make my family and community proud,” she said.

Pillay acknowledged that her journey to success was not one she walked alone. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to Raylee Samonia Du Plessis, who stood beside her throughout the demanding nine months and supported her through countless late nights of studying.

She also thanked KC Rashika for the encouragement and support she received along the way. At the heart of her journey is her family, whose support and belief in her gave the young achiever another reason to keep pushing when the road became difficult.
Pillay described the inspiration she receives from her parents as overwhelming and credited her family with being an important source of encouragement throughout her journey.
