MCT: Can you tell us a bit about who Thiara Naidoo is beyond the DJ persona?
TN: Beyond the DJ persona, I am a highly driven and ambitious individual who is deeply committed to both personal and professional growth. I completed my Bachelor’s of Law (LLB) in 2025, and I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Taxation (LLM) at UKZN. I also serve as the President of the Golden Key International Honour Society, where I work closely with the university and student body to lead academic and community-focused initiatives. I am passionate about leadership, education, and empowerment, and I take pride in using my platform to inspire others, particularly young women, to pursue excellence in multiple fields.
MCT: What initially sparked your passion for music, and how did that evolve into a career in DJing?
TN: My passion for music began at a very young age, as it was always present in my environment. I was fascinated by the way music could instantly shift moods and bring people together. Over time, that curiosity turned into a desire to be more involved in creating those experiences. I began experimenting with mixing music, initially as a hobby, but the first time I performed in front of a live audience was a turning point. Seeing people respond to my music, dance, and enjoy themselves made me realise that this could be more than just a passion—it could be a career. Since then, I have worked consistently to refine my craft and build a name for myself in the industry.
MCT: The name “DJ Law-T” is distinctive—what is the story and meaning behind it?
TN: The name “DJ Law-T” is a reflection of both my identity and my journey. It combines my academic background in law with a play on my name, creating a unique and memorable brand. It represents the balance between my academic pursuits and my passion for music, showing that I do not have to choose one path over the other. Instead, I embrace both, and the name has become a symbol of versatility, ambition, and individuality.
MCT: You are currently pursuing a Master’s degree while actively performing—how do you manage such a demanding balance?
TN: It requires a high level of discipline, time management, and dedication. I carefully plan my schedule to ensure that I meet both my academic and professional commitments. DJing also plays an important role in helping me finance my studies, which adds an additional layer of motivation. While it can be demanding, I see it as an opportunity to grow in multiple areas of my life. The ability to successfully manage both has strengthened my resilience and work ethic.
MCT: Could you walk us through your creative process when preparing for a set?
TN: My creative process begins with understanding the nature of the event and the audience I will be performing for. I research the venue, the type of crowd, and the overall atmosphere expected. From there, I curate a versatile set that includes different genres, ensuring that I can adapt as needed. I focus on building a journey within my set, starting with a certain mood and gradually elevating the energy. While preparation is essential, I also rely heavily on intuition during the performance, allowing me to respond organically to the crowd.
MCT: As an open-format DJ, how do you ensure your sound remains fresh and relevant across diverse events?
TN: Being an open-format DJ requires constant learning and adaptability. I stay updated with the latest trends while also appreciating timeless music. My goal is to create a unique blend that feels both current and authentic. This versatility allows me to perform at a wide range of events, from clubs to corporate functions and private celebrations.
MCT: Which performance to date stands out as a defining moment in your career, and why?
TN: One of my most standout moments would definitely have to be performing at my own event, Level 21. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience, as it allowed me to bring my vision to life, from conceptualising the event to curating my own DJ lineup. Seeing everything come together so successfully was both exciting and rewarding, and it reminded me that with determination and hard work, anything is possible. Another significant milestone was performing in Johannesburg for the first time, as it marked my growth beyond Durban and established me as a national DJ. That experience opened new doors and allowed me to connect with a completely different audience. Performing at the Durban July, one of the most prestigious events in the country, was also a defining moment. Being part of such a high-profile event was both an honour and a major career milestone. That being said, every event I play holds its own unique value. Each crowd, venue, and experience is different in the best way possible, and those moments collectively shape my journey and growth as a DJ.
MCT: As a female DJ in a predominantly male industry, what barriers have you had to overcome?
TN: As a female DJ, I have had to overcome stereotypes and moments of being underestimated. There is still limited representation, which can make it challenging, but it has also motivated me to work harder and stand out. I am proud to be part of a new generation of women who are breaking barriers and redefining what is possible in the industry.
MCT: What has been the most significant lesson you have learned on your journey so far?
TN: One of the most important lessons I have learned is the value of consistency and resilience. Success requires patience, hard work, and the ability to keep going even when faced with challenges. Staying focused on your goals and believing in yourself is essential.
MCT: Did you experience any resistance or criticism, and how did you remain focused in the face of it?
TN: Yes, I have experienced criticism, including cyberbullying within the DJ industry. However, I chose not to let negativity define me. Instead, I used it as motivation to improve and prove myself through my work. Staying focused on my goals has always been my priority.
MCT: Social media plays a key role in building a brand—how do you maintain authenticity while managing public perception?
TN: I ensure that my content reflects my true personality and values. Authenticity is important because it builds trust with my audience. I focus on sharing real moments and maintaining a genuine connection with my followers.
MCT: You have received several accolades at a young age—how do you stay grounded amidst growing recognition?
TN: I stay grounded by remembering where I started and remaining focused on continuous improvement. Giving back to my community also keeps me humble and reminds me of the importance of using my success to uplift others.
MCT: What did winning competitions like Battle of the DJs mean for your confidence and career trajectory?
TN: Winning the Battle of the DJs in 2022 and 2023 was a significant milestone for me. It validated my talent and boosted my confidence. It also opened doors to new opportunities and helped establish my credibility in the industry.
MCT: Outside of your career and studies, how do you spend your free time?
TN: I enjoy spending time with family and friends, exploring new music, and engaging in activities that allow me to relax and recharge.
MCT: Are there particular genres or artists that are currently influencing your sound?
TN: I draw strong inspiration from South African music, particularly amapiano, gqom, and Afro-house, as these genres shape my sound and allow me to connect with audiences in an authentic and meaningful way. At the same time, I have a deep appreciation for exploring international music, especially the creativity behind remixes and how a single track can be transformed across different styles. This curiosity enables me to continuously evolve, incorporating a diverse range of global influences into my sets while maintaining a unique and versatile sound.
MCT: If given the opportunity, which artists or DJs would you most like to collaborate with?
TN: I would love to collaborate with artists such as DJ Tira, Tyler ICU, and Kabza De Small, as they have played a major role in shaping the South African music scene, as well as international DJs including James Hype.
MCT: What guidance would you offer to young women aspiring to enter the DJ industry?
TN: Believe in yourself, remain consistent, and do not allow societal expectations to limit you. Hard work, resilience, and confidence are key to success.
MCT: Looking ahead, what are your long-term goals for both your music career and professional journey?
