An inspiring adapted sports awareness event was held on, Wednesday, 7 Mayat the Niki Singh Occupational Therapy Practice in Halpin Avenue, Reservoir Hills.

The event brought together 25 youth aged 16 to 18 years from disabled schools across Durban, creating a space for learning, motivation, and connection through sport.
The schools represented included Maison Lincoln School (Umlazi), R.P. Moodley School (Reservoir Hills), Open Air School (Glenwood), and Bright Future, and Inanda Special School.

The organiser, Niki Singh, also the practice owner said the aim was to expose learners to the wide range of adapted sports available to them after leaving school.
“Many young people with disabilities lose access to sports once they finish school, which can lead to a decline in the motor and social skills they had previously developed. Occupational therapy is about reintegrating individuals into their daily lives. This includes meaningful activities like sport. That’s where local non-profit organisations come in—they provide the much-needed support and platforms,” said Singh.

The programme featured presentations and demonstrations from several Durban-based NPOs working in disability sports, including: wheelchair basketball by eThekwini Spears; triathlons, adapted mountain biking, and hand cycling by Jason Hall; adapted surfing by Made for More SA; and sitting volleyball done by Paravolley SA.

Adding further inspiration to the day were two well-known South African para-athletes: Mhlengi Gwala, a paratriathlon athlete, and Samekelisiwe Mbatha, a South African National Para Wheelchair Basketball player. Both shared powerful personal stories, reminding the youth that challenges can be overcome with resilience and a positive mindset.

Singh who has been involved with four disability-focused NPOs over the years said she hopes the event will raise awareness about the importance of sport for young people living with disabilities and encourage the community to support these organisations. “There are many avenues for sport in Durban, and youth should feel empowered to participate,” she said.
