The community of Mountview in Verulam has long been part of the struggle for water following the devastating floods that wreaked havoc in the north of Durban area in April and May.
The residents have been relying heavily on municipal tankers and sponsored water, from generous donors. However, with the donation of a new 5000 litre Jojo tank, the residents have found some relief in their constant struggle.
Martha Narainsamy, a resident who was instrumental in installing the tank, said the community got together to work on the construction of the base. “It was not an easy task but as a community we managed to get the tank installed. The Mountview CPF played a very critical role in it’s set up as well. It was put up primarily to service two flats but it is also for anyone who needs it. To ensure everyone has access to this water it is limited to three buckets per family. While that may sound less, it will ensure every family gets some,” Narainsamy said.
She added that the tank, sponsored by businessman Ricky Naidoo, brought excitement and comfort to the community. “Previously approximately 32 families would have to walk to collect water from the nearest tank or keep themselves ready for when the tankers came around. This means the elderly, young and sick would have to carry buckets of water back to their home. Many hurt themselves and suffered arm and back injuries. At the very least, the community understands that with the installation of the new Jojo tank they will have a steady supply of water and their risks of injury would be lessened,” Narainsamy said.
