Wentworth SAPS is investigating a serious crash which occurred on Raj Mahal Road in Merebank where a motorist ploughed into a fast food outlet leaving two people injured, one critically, on Tuesday, 27 August.
Emergency services, police and security personnel rushed to the scene to find the two casualties on the ground and that the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene. ALS Paramedics responded to the scene and spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said: “On arrival, paramedics found chaos as they discovered a single vehicle had ploughed into the building injuring two people, leaving a female entrapped under the vehicle with critical injuries. The lady, believed to be in her 30s, was stabilised on scene by Advanced Life Support paramedics before being rushed to Ahmed Al Khadi Private Hospital for the urgent care that she required. The second victim, a male, had sustained moderate injuries and was also transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance.”

PT Ambulance Service and PT Alarms Tactical units were quickly on scene and spokesperson, Dhevan Govindasamy, said: “The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. PT Alarms Tactical Unit, assisted by PT Armed Response and Blue Security, searched for and apprehended the runaway driver. He was handed over to Wentworth SAPS on scene. The female casualty, an employee of the food outlet, was entrapped under the vehicle and was extricated and treated on scene by ALS paramedics. An elderly male pedestrian tried to avoid the vehicle but was struck and sustained injuries. He was treated on scene by PT Ambulance Service paramedics and transported
to hospital.”
Wentworth SAPS communications officer, Captain MP Gumede, confirmed that the accident is under investigation and said: “Detectives are investigating a case of drunken driving, reckless and negligent driving, and malicious damage to property for the incident at KFC on Raj Mahal Road. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to report to the police at Wentworth SAPS and assist with information.”
