Refurbishment work on Durban’s iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium is officially underway, following eThekwini Council’s approval of R236 million for upgrades. Now 15 years old, the stadium will remain open for major events during repairs, with its structural safety confirmed by engineers.
These upgrades are part of routine maintenance designed to uphold the stadium’s world-class status. New features will include an expanded viewing platform with a glass-floored “Air Walk,” an upgraded Sky Car accessible to all, an enhanced Big Swing with improved platform access, a zip line ending at People’s Park, and a panoramic Compression Ring Walk with a sea-facing bungee jump option.

On Thursday, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba and his delegation toured the stadium with project engineers to view the progress made in the first phase of refurbishment. Engineers outlined the upgrades and discussed future plans aimed at maintaining the stadium’s reputation as one of eThekwini’s premier tourist destinations.
The project is expected to be completed by next summer, though no specific date was provided. These improvements will ensure that Moses Mabhida remains a key attraction, generating revenue, supporting local jobs, and enhancing safety and resilience in line with modern standards.
