In a proactive move to uphold immigration and labour laws, Durban Metro Police recently carried out a compliance inspection at a section of shops in the city centre — part of their ongoing efforts to maintain order and ensure lawful business operations within the community.

The operation focused on verifying whether individuals working or operating within the area were legally residing in South Africa and possessed the required documentation. A total of 45 people were taken in for verification, with 40 individuals arrested on the spot for failing to produce valid permits or legal papers.

The Department of Home Affairs is currently reviewing the documents of the remaining five individuals, including one shop owner, who are still under investigation.
Metro Police have emphasised that such inspections are not raids, but routine checks aimed at supporting community safety, fair labour practices, and legal compliance among businesses. These operations also serve to protect the rights of legal workers and create an environment where all businesses operate on a level playing field.

Officials confirmed that similar compliance efforts will continue across other areas in the city in the coming months as part of a broader strategy to address illegal immigration and unregulated employment.

Community members and business owners are encouraged to ensure that all relevant documentation is in order to avoid any disruption to their operations.
