The Rotary Club of Phoenix recently held a mental health awareness day at the Bethsaida Ministries International Full Gospel Church in Phoenix, where the elderly where enlightened on self-care and made avoiding mental afflictions.
The month of October is dedicated to celebrating and honouring senior citizens and has also been declared as the month highlighting mental wellness. According to the World Health Organisation, many senior citizens in various communities are affected by the scourge of loneliness, depression and anxiety. In view of this alarming revelation, the Rotary Club of Phoenix hosted the mental health awareness day for 150 seniors from the community.

On their arrival, seniors were treated to a sumptuous breakfast before being pampered with manicures and hand massages. The staff from the mental wellness hospital, Mondia, were also present to undertake medical checks for the elderly. Psychiatrist, Dr Lynette Moodley and Psychologist, Lisha Bhadree also provided free individual treatment to those who required their services. There was also an attorney, Vasantha Naidoo, present to give the elderly free legal advice.
The seniors were addressed by Dr Lynette Moodley, Lisha Bhadreethe, social worker Julie Gopal, professional nurse Poovasha Naicker and Physiotherapist, Sugantha Moodley who shared practical hints and tips on how they can live a full and active life free of pain and anxiety. The attendees were treated to a delicious lunch and left with goody bags, lucky prizes and most importantly armed with information on self-care and managing their mental well-being better.
