The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has strongly discouraged the alarming and disruptive ‘Pens Down’ activities that often follow Grade 12 examinations. They say these activities, which include public drinking, vandalism, and inappropriate behaviour such as tearing or writing on school uniforms, undermine the values of respect and responsibility they strive to instil in learners.

The Department encourages Matriculants to donate their school uniforms in gift packs to needy learners when they come to collect their statement of results on Tuesday, 14 January.

The Department acknowledges that for many, the completion of examinations marks a significant milestone. However, they urge learners to celebrate this achievement responsibly, in a manner that reflects dignity and respect for themselves, their peers, and their communities.

MEC for Education Sipho Hlomuka said: “While we commend our learners for completing this critical chapter of their academic journey, we cannot condone activities that place them and others at risk. Let us prioritise safety, respect for property and the wellbeing of our communities during this time. We encourage parents, guardians and communities to work together with schools to prevent risky ‘pens down’ events. Learners should remember that their actions not only impact upon themselves but also reflects on their schools and families.”

As the Matric final examinations approach it’s conclusion on Thursday, 28 November, the Department calls on all stakeholders to promote positive, meaningful celebrations that will inspire pride and uphold the values of discipline, integrity, and respect.
