The helpless family of missing 20-year-old Kerusha Singh is appealing to the community for any “factual information and proof of her whereabouts” after not being able to speak to or see her for more than six months.

According to her family, Singh left home to live with her step-sister in October 2023, and they have not seen her since. After numerous failed efforts to make contact with Singh and her step-sister, the family eventually opened a missing persons case with Phoenix SAPS.

Her aunt, Amina Pillay, told the Phoenix Tabloid, that the family has been through a lot lately but has not given up on finding or making contact with Singh.

“There has been so much happening as my family and I have done a lot in trying to get a hold of my niece, however, every time we try it’s like we hitting a rock,” Pillay said.

“We understand that she is 20 and that she can make her own decisions but we need to know that she is safe. According to what we know, she has been living with her step-sister, however, we have no way to confirm this as her sister has never allowed her to speak to us or showed us any signs that she is okay. It is a very uncomfortable and worrying situation as we have been getting information about my niece being prostituted, however, we do not know how true this is.”

Pillay said despite the missing person’s case being opened and continuous searching, they have not been able to get any information about her niece. She said the family has been sharing posts and Singh’s image on social media in hopes of her seeing it or somebody who may know of her location.

“There have been so many stories going around and we just want the truth. We just need to know that she is alive and safe. Every time we try to contact her, her step-sister either speaks to us or avoids our calls. Imagine not speaking to your niece for six months and yet being told that she is fine. We started to become worried as every time we would ask to speak to Kerusha, her step-sister would divert the call, or messages or just ignore us, and say she was fine. What if she is not fine and we do not know anything about it,” she added.

Pillay shared that she is hoping that the community would be able to assist in finding Singh so that they can find out what is happening.

“If anyone has seen Kerusha please contact the police and let us know. If she wants to stay with her step-sister its fine and if she does not want to speak to us for some reason we will be okay with that but we just need to have proof to see that she is alive and well. This has been a very confusing situation for our family as we do not know what to think. The safety of Kerusha is our main priority,” she said.

Phoenix communications officer, Constable Carol Mntambo confirmed that a missing person case is currently being investigated. She said: “Phoenix SAPS is seeking assistance from the community with any information regarding missing persons Kerusha Singh, 20. She went missing from her aunt’s place of residents at Devanmore, Phoenix, in November 2023. It is unknown what she was wearing at the time she went missing. She is tall, long black hair and dark in complexion.”

Cst Mntambo added that anyone with information can contact Sgt BN Mthembu on 031 508 2348 or Phoenix SAPS on 031 508 2307. Pillay urged for her niece to get in touch with here family, as they are concerned about her safety and her whereabouts.
