Brandon Collins, a matriculant from Marian Ridge Secondary School and a resident of Newlands is appealing to the community to assist him to reach his goals of studying towards a paramedic qualification. Working towards his goal, Collins started a grass-cutting business which has become stagnant due to the impact of Covid-19.

The 21-year-old together with his younger brother are trying everything in their power to put food on the table for their mother who also lost her job as a cashier due to the pandemic. He said he would like for the community to make use of his grass-cutting services which will enable him to pay rent and look after his single mother. As part of his second hustle, Collins does carpentry jobs which are also not going well at the moment. “I do not want to sit around and hope that something will come along and therefore working two jobs is my way of raising money for my studies,” said Collins.

Collins said his carpentry jobs pay him R500 which he uses to put a roof over his family’s heads. “If I could get more clients who call me for small jobs on a weekly basis, I feel that things would be better. My next goal is to raise enough funds to obtain my driver’s licence which will bring me closer to applying to be a paramedic,” Collins added.

Collins’s mother, Annie, said that her son is a very respectable young man who always puts his mind into everything he does. “My son loves reading non-fiction books as he says it gives him a better outlook on life. I am very grateful for the little money that he gets paid and still manages to buy bread for the house and pays for our rent. He puts us before his own needs and this breaks my heart,” said Annie.
She said that she knows that his passion to be a paramedic comes from the passion he has to help people.
