A recent operation by Durban Metro Police Service, in collaboration with other EThekwini Municipality departments, to enforce bylaws and ensure public safety around the Durban CBD, yielded shocking results with the discovery of expired and unsafe food items and operating illegally with no business license.
Metro Police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, said during the operation, a supermarket on Margaret Mncadi Avenue was inspected and found to be in serious violation of health and safety standards.
“Packs of Huggies and Pampers nappies were past their expiration date. Rusted tins of food were being sold. The store was operating illegally. The premises were unsanitary and unfit for operation,” said Col Zungu.
“Expired and unsafe goods were removed and disposed of in a compactor truck. The store has been closed due to non-compliance with bylaws.
This operation reflects our commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy environment in Durban. We urge all businesses to comply with legal requirements and ensure public safety,” Col Zungu added.
