The Greater Durban Golf Club kicked off its 2026 season on a high note, hosting its first event of the year in a spirit of camaraderie and celebration as members honoured the club’s long-serving treasurer, Christy Govender, on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

Golfers took to the greens for an enjoyable day that was less about fierce rivalry and more about fellowship, marking both the start of the new season and a personal milestone for one of the club’s valued office bearers.

Govender, who celebrated his birthday on 25 December 2025, spent the day far from the fairways, dedicating the occasion to charitable work in India. Upon his return to South Africa, he chose to share the celebration with his fellow golfers.

“Being a Sai devotee for more than 25 years and committed to serving the needy, I chose to celebrate my birthday with the poor,” said Govender. “In an Indian village about 20 kilometres from Prasanthi, I handed out 60 saris, dhotis and grocery hampers. When I got home to South Africa, I decided to celebrate this milestone with my fellow golfers.”

In keeping with the celebratory mood, Govender sponsored both lunch and prizes for the club’s first tournament of 2026. The event attracted a strong field of 44 players, including six guest golfers from neighbouring clubs, adding to the competitive yet friendly atmosphere.

Club president Dr Kervyn Ramruthan praised the gesture, highlighting the values that underpin the club. “Our treasurer was kind enough to sponsor our first tournament for the new year, and we were happy to celebrate with him,” he said. “The day was less about intense competition and more about fun and enjoyment, encouraging everyone to play for the love of the sport. That is our club culture — we are a family club. While we enjoy being competitive, we place great importance on the joy of playing golf.”

The event set a positive tone for the season ahead, as the Greater Durban Golf Club looks forward to another year of sport, friendship and shared passion for the game.
