The eThekwini Municipality’s Operation Good Hope has begun in Ward 33, encompassing Glenwood, Umbilo, and Bulwer. The operation, which focuses on service delivery and municipal by-law enforcement, will run for a week, aiming to address key concerns and improve the community’s infrastructure.
Preparatory work for the operation has already started, with construction teams seen resurfacing parts of Bartle Road. Additionally, a new pedestrian crossing has been installed outside Glenwood High School. This was a direct response to a proposal submitted last month after a learner was knocked down outside the school.
Ward 33 Councillor Fran Christopher confirmed that the operation commenced on Monday and will continue until Friday, 29 November. She highlighted the collaborative efforts of local Urban Improvement Precincts (UIPs), SAPS, Metro Police, and the Community Policing Forum (CPF), all of whom are supporting the initiative. An introductory briefing for all stakeholders was held on Monday, 25 November, marking the official launch of the programme.
Councillor Kristopher said, “Operation Good Hope is designed to address the pressing service delivery concerns within our community while also reinforcing municipal by-laws. This initiative will ensure that our streets and businesses comply with the necessary regulations, helping to create a safer, more orderly environment for everyone.”
She added, “We are working closely with the Area-Based Management (ABM) Unit to identify key areas where intervention is most needed, including health and safety issues, building compliance, and essential water and sanitation concerns. This is a collaborative effort, and the community’s involvement is vital to its success.”
Operation Good Hope underscores eThekwini Municipality’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents by promoting order, safety, and community welfare. After the rollout in Ward 33, the initiative will expand to other wards to maximise its impact.
