Rapid Response Team (RRT) Newlands chairperson, Dr Nadia Bernon, said, “Real heroes don’t wear capes; they are the everyday warriors in our communities, fighting tirelessly for justice and safety.”
Dr Bernon made this statement at the auspicious and historic official opening of the gender-based violence (GBV) advice sites recently in Lakehaven Estate and Garrupa Patch.
She explained that these offices will serve as a safe space, offering physical safety, emotional support, and guidance to survivors of gender-based violence.
“The RRT members in the Newlands East community aim to provide critical support to women and children affected by gender-based violence, particularly within the crucial first 24 hours. Our RRT members are compassionate and trained as first responders, as they are the first point of contact for survivors. We provide immediate assistance and ensure survivors have access to the support they need.”

Dr Bernon emphasised the critical need for such spaces in the Newlands community to support women during their moments of crisis. The offices will also serve as a space for children who seek assistance and support when experiencing, reporting, or being exposed to GBV-related matters.
In collaboration with the Ubunye organisation, RRT will host an event to conclude the 16 Days of Activism campaign on Tuesday, 10 December, at Heavens Light Family Church, 54 Skipdale Road, Newlands West, from 7pm to 9pm.
“Led by comedian Jeremiah Gounden and former Child Protection Unit captain, K Gounden, the event aims to empower the community with vital information to unite, mobilise, and fight against GBV, child abduction, pornography, and sexual abuse,” said Dr Bernon.
She added that anyone wishing to be part of this exciting event should RSVP by contacting Yolanda Ecksteen via call or WhatsApp on 062 860 1894.
Dr Bernon also informed the community that RTT will host a Christmas party on Saturday, 7 December, at the Newlands East Library Hall from 10am. “ This will be in collabration with the Wild Flower Project that targets the 100 young school girls only,” emphasised Dr Bernon.
