The Al-Imdaad Foundation’s rural gardening project is bearing fruit, making communities to become more self-sufficient. In one of its latest success stories the Soul City crèche in Bhekuzulu, Estcourt, harvested their own vegetables.

Seed for the crèche’s garden was planted in late 2020 as part of the Al-Imdaad Foundation’s “one-crèche-one-garden” and the community is already benefitting from the produce.

The crèche recently harvested 48.7kg of brinjals and 16.4 kg of green pepper
a small nine-square-metre plot. This produce was purchased by the Al-Imdaad Foundation’s Green Grocer store as part of its agreement to buy up the extra items.

The income received by the crèche will allow it to re-invest into the garden and cover other operational expenses. The Al-Imdaad Foundation’s projects coordinator, Mubeen Peer, said that it was great working with the crèche and its pupils in the garden.
