The family and friends of murder victim Liam Fernandez are reeling in anger after two suspects arrested in relation to his death were granted bail at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court.

Fernandez, 28, was shot following an altercation at the forecourt of a petrol station in Park Rynie. Captain Adam Francis, Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, said Fernandez was killed on 19 February at around 10.45pm. He said: “Two suspects, aged 25 and 37, were arrested for the murder of the 28-year-old at the forecourt of the petrol station in Park Rynie which occurred on 19 February. It is alleged that the 28-year-old male had an argument with the occupants of another vehicle. One of the occupants shot the victim several times. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”

The case of murder was investigated by Scottburgh police who had a breakthrough with the arrest of the two suspects. “The suspects appeared in court and they were granted bail,” said Francis.

Following the release of the suspects, social media was abuzz with the family and friends of Fernandez expressing their anger and disgust at the “injustice”. A Facebook user said: “So we just going to be silent about this. The guys got bail and they still looking for others. They can enjoy their families raise their children. Look after their parents and have good times with friends while we are here mourning with our lives turned upside down. We have to fight for justice. God will punish each and everyone of you in his way, in this life or the next. The truth will come out, mark my words.” A friend of the deceased said: “On the day that you passed away we walked home from work together if only I knew it was our last walk together that moment replays in my mind I will always love you my small brother.” The two suspects will reappear at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of murder.
