A family in South Beach was left distraught after their apartment on the 14th floor of the Mont Blanc was engulfed in fire recently.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries, however, the family have lost important documents, including their identity documents, birth certificates, qualification certificates and furniture. The family said that they do not know how the fire started as they were not there at the time.“We had gone up to our brother’s flat on the 22nd floor for supper when the fire started. We left our apartment at around 6pm and approximately an hour or two later, we were told to evacuate the building as there was a fire,” said the owner, who was not aware that it was his bedroom that was on fire.

He said that emergency services were on the scene to put out the fire and managed to stop the blaze from spreading.

The owner said that the family is upset about the false information spread by a news article claiming that one person, a woman, was injured in the fire as no one was injured.

Ward 26 PR councillor, Sharmaine Sewshanker, visited the flat on 26 February to assess the damage and meet with the family.

She said that it was devastating to see a family lose irreplaceable belongings. “The memories they have built over the years in their home can never replaced. We are glad that nobody was hurt and that the other rooms of the apartment were not badly damaged. I have assured the family that I will assist them with whatever assistance they require,” said Sewshanker.

This fire is the second fire that has torched a family home within this month. The family is yet to report the fire to the relevant authorities for investigations to continue.

The Mont Blanc supervisor said that they suspect that the fire was started by an electrical fault and are awaiting confirmation after investigations have been completed.
