Checkers staff together with members of the Waterval Correctional Service and recipients of the food parcels

The Covid-19 pandemic is far from over as people are still trying their best to get their lives back to some kind of new normal. For many families, it has been a tough year with some losing loved ones to Covid-19 and others not being able to work and support their dependants.

It is easy for some, during a time like this, to turn to a life of crime, however, there are others who are willing to do whatever it takes to live an honest life and battle through the tough times. Checkers Castle Rock, together with the Department of Correctional Services have teamed up to provide ten families with much-needed assistance during this trying time.

One of the ten recipients, Michael Showngwe, 43, said that he was in prison for seven years and was released in July this year. Although tough, the experience has changed his life. “I am thankful for the time I spent behind bars as it has opened my eyes. I cannot continue to live a life of crime. The lockdown has, however, brought some very hard times. I cannot find work anywhere to support my family and my two children.

“I make ends meet by finding the odd job here and there by painting and doing some construction work. When people hear that you have been in prison they are very reluctant to offer you a second chance and assist with work, so today I am very thankful; to Checkers and the Waterval Department of Correctional Services for choosing me as one of the recipients for the food parcels. It is going to help me and at least my family will have a meal,” he explained.

Acting Area Commissioner for Waterval Management Area, Vusi Nksi, said that he was pleased that the department was able to assist. “We are thankful to Checkers Castle Rock for their contribution today and we hope that this will provide the family with assistance,” he said.

Sorenis Bepat, manager at Checkers, said: “On behalf of Checkers Castle Rock, we are proud to be able to sponsor these families with food parcels and we hope that it will go a long way.”

The recipients were also entertained by the staff of Checkers as they danced the Jerusalema Dance Challenge for them. “This has been a kind gesture and I would like to thank each person who contributed to these parcels today,” said Nthobi Ngwenya, another recipient.
