The atmosphere at Durban Container Terminals (DCT) was electric as Transnet unveiled a major delivery of new cargo handling equipment, marking a significant step in its 2025 operational upgrade. Employees, executives, and industry stakeholders gathered in high spirits on Thursday, 27 February, to celebrate the arrival of 20 state-of-the-art straddle carriers for Pier 2 and nine rubber-tyred gantry cranes for Pier 1.
This investment forms part of Transnet’s ambitious 18-month recovery plan, launched in 2023, to tackle operational challenges and enhance efficiency at South Africa’s busiest port terminal.
Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has committed R3.4 billion this year to upgrading its fleet, with DCT receiving the bulk of the investment. Additional equipment, including four ship-to-shore cranes for the South Quay, 40 haulers, and 67 trailers, is set to arrive between April and December 2025, further reinforcing the terminal’s capacity.
Speaking amidst an atmosphere of celebration, Transnet Board Chairperson Andile Sangqu addressed the excited crowd, saying:
“Today is a proud moment for Transnet and everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring us here. Our recovery hinges on directly addressing the challenges that have hindered our performance, and investing in infrastructure is central to our vision. This milestone lays the foundation for a more efficient and dependable Transnet. It also reaffirms our commitment to strengthening South Africa’s ports, ensuring they function at world-class standards.”
He emphasised that the new equipment would play a key role in easing congestion, improving efficiency, and restoring Transnet’s reputation as a global leader in port operations.
