EThekwini police make over 4,000 arrests in one month

July was a busy month for police in the eThekwini District, with officers making an impressive 4,167 arrests as part of their ongoing fight against crime. From violent offences to property crimes, SAPS members were out in full force, ensuring criminals were brought to book.

Among those arrested were 60 suspects for murder and 74 for attempted murder. Police also nabbed 106 suspects linked to various robberies, including aggravated robbery, carjacking, cash-in-transit heists, and house and business break-ins. Detectives worked tirelessly on gender-based violence cases, arresting 46 suspects for rape and eight for sexual assault. Assault cases remained a major concern, with 568 people charged for either assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm or common assault.

Property crimes also kept police busy, with 70 suspects arrested for burglary at homes and businesses, stock theft, and the theft of or from motor vehicles. In addition, officers recovered 154 stolen vehicles and 35 vehicles used in the commission of crimes. Dangerous weapons, including 78 knives and other arms, as well as 146 illegal firearms and 1,604 rounds of ammunition, were also seized. Large amounts of liquor, nonferrous metals, and drugs were taken off the streets.

Operations in known crime hotspots will continue, with police determined to keep the pressure on offenders. This Women’s Month, the district will also host “Basadi Operations” – joint law enforcement drives led by women officers, focusing on increasing police visibility and preventing crime.

Major General MV Kheswa praised his team’s efforts, saying their bravery, vigilance, and professionalism deserve recognition. “The fight against crime is real. As we enter August, our operations will continue with the same focus – to make eThekwini safer and bring those who break the law to justice,” he said
