A six-month-old baby girl was rescued on Thursday evening after being found abandoned on a pile of boxes at the corner of Tyzack and Gillespie Streets in central Durban.
Durban Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said officers were alerted by a passer-by and discovered the infant with a bag of clothes nearby. She was taken to hospital, found to be in good health, and later placed in the care of William Clark Gardens Children’s Home in Sherwood.

The swift response by Metro Police was widely praised by the North Beach CPF and community members, with social media users hailing the officers as heroes. Others condemned the mother’s actions, calling the abandonment “heartless” and “sad.”
The baby remains safe while social workers continue investigations.
