A frustrated Phoenix daughter sought intervention from crime-fighters on Friday, when she reported her father’s thieving habits and requested that he be arrested after he allegedly stole from her house to feed his alcohol and drug addiction.

A member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was on patrol when the occupants of a light motor vehicle flagged him down at approximately 7.43pm. RUSA head, Prem Balram, said: “A female requested assistance to apprehend her 50-year-old father who had stolen valuables from her newly-purchased home. Bedding, 17 bags of cement, a stove and an extractor fan which amounted to more than R10 000 were among

the items stolen by him over a two-week period. He was alone at the residence while renovations were being conducted on the property. His daughter received information that her father was seen selling the stolen goods to neighbours. Frustrated with having to deal with years of theft, the female registered a criminal case against her father.” According to Balram, the complainant provided the reaction officer with a description of the suspect and the information was circulated to other RUSA members in the vicinity. “A man matching the description was located on Phoenix Highway. He was apprehended and was positively identified by his daughter upon her arrival. Police from the Phoenix SAPS opted to release the suspect and re-arrest him at a later stage when a detective was available,” said Balram.
