A convicted murder accused was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the fatal shooting of Leyton Fyn (18) in June 2023.

Wentworth SAPS communications officer, Captain MP Gumede, said the accused who was 18 years of age, committed murder along Richard Winn Road in Wentworth, on 27 June 2023.

“The accused had fired several shots to the deceased who just came out of his yard or premises, dressed in school uniform and was on his way to attend extra classes at school.
The members of Vispol SAPS Wentworth and detectives from the station attended the scene, and the evidence was collected by a specialised unit. On 30 June 2023, the suspect was arrested and later formally charged for the murder case,” Gumede said.

He said the case docket was assigned to Detective Sergeant Ntuthuko Cele, who followed the case using his knowledge and expert investigational skills.
“The detective obtained witnesses statements and collected all the necessary evidence to present a strong case before court.

On 2 July 2023, the accused was charged for murder and the docket presented in court. The accused appeared in regional court on several occasions, until he was sentenced for murder. The accused is serving 15 years imprisonment in Westville prison,” said Gumede.
According to Gumede, Cele was highly praised by the court prosecutor and the Detective Commander Lieutenant Colonel Dale Duke for ensuring that the accused remained behind bars for murder he had committed, and that justice has been served to the family who had lost a young family member.

“Cele thanked the witnesses who were cooperative and brave enough to give evidence during the trial and court proceedings.

The Station Commander, Colonel Mtshali, urged the community to blow the whistle against crime and be the eyes and ears of SAPS,” Gumede said. Report crime to CrimeStop on 08600-10111 or Wentworth SAPS on 031- 451 6240, 031- 451 6241 and 031- 451 6242.
