In an effort to empower adults and improve access to education, members of the community are being encouraged to register for a free adult learning programme that offers individuals the opportunity to complete their schooling qualifications. Registrations at the adult learning centre in Solvista Secondary School are currently open for individuals who meet the requirements.
Speaking to the Phoenix Tabloid, lecturer at the adult learning school, Lutchmee Naidoo said: “In an attempt to alleviate unemployment and up-skill the community, the Solvista Community Learning Centre is offering free adult education and training programmes for the community of Phoenix and surrounding areas. This initiative is aimed at supporting individuals who have previously not completed their formal education or who are seeking to upgrade their qualifications. Many people find themselves unable to complete their schooling career due to many challenges, but this programme seeks to level the playing field and open doors to new career opportunities.”
She said, “These programmes are offered by the KZN Community Education and Training College (CET) department and all certificates are Umalusi accredited. The centre offers classes for everyone ranging from Level 1 – 3 for those who do not have a Grade 7 pass, General Education and Training Certificate Level 4 (NQF Level 1) and an amended senior certificate (Matric) for adults who are 21 years and over. The initiative is fully funded, meaning participants will not incur any charges, removing a significant barrier for many adults who want to continue their education. A matric certificate is often required for many jobs and beyond the career advantages, obtaining a matric certificate can boost self-confidence and open the door to lifelong learning and development.”
“We would like to congratulate our learner, Waheeda Mohammed, 36, who sat for the general education and training certificate Level 4 examinations in November 2024 and obtained outstanding results. She received four distinctions despite adversities along the way and all her hard work has paid off. She had to leave school at the age of 13 years old due to financial constraints and after getting a job, she was fired in 2023 because she didn’t have a matric certificate. Waheeda joined the adult centre at Solvista Secondary to obtain her NQF Level 1 and now that she has achieved it, is looking forward to pursuing her studies and obtaining her Grade 12 senior certificate,” said Naidoo.

Whether you left school early, faced obstacles along the way or simply want to complete your matric certificate for better job prospects – this is your chance.
